BMW E39 5 series pre-production September 2000 (9/00) came with the old-style halogen rear lights. Post September 2000 (9/00) BMW used much nicer lights, also made by Hella, that include LED segments. They look 100% better! Fitting the lights from a model-year 2001+ E39 to a model-year 2000 and older E39 was possible, but very difficult. Hella has made a retrofit kit for us model-year 2000 and older owners. Some minor modifications and the use of ballasts are required, but it’s no big deal if you have a bit of time to work with (maybe 1-2 hours tops.) I purchased my kit (Part Number 63212496297RW) here: www.turnermotorsport.com I used Phillips Silvervision PY21W bulbs in my rear turn signals so you don’t see the stock orange bulbs inside. I believe mine came from here: www.amazon.com Thanks so much for watching, let me know if you have any questions about this job!

Hey, this is my video. (Ryan Schultz)

To make them fit without modification, you would need the OEM lights to the 2000, which I don’t want. So these are made for the pre-facelift, but still do require this minor modification.

    Thanks for watching!

Hey Andrew, couldn’t you find a tail lights out there that could fit right like the old ones already in without need for drilling a new holes or pounding on the metal to make them fit? Thanks.

Maybe you would like to buy my old lights with the clear turn signals. 😉

I have the same as your old M5 ones, but orange indicator plastic bit. I like the facelift, but I love how the reverse segment on pre-facelift versions is blended into the rest of the lamp (red ish).

Ahh, I definitely considered an M3 and a couple other coupes (pontiac gto…crap, G35…decent, just not for me, subaru brz…awesome just too slow)even though I’m only 18 I’d prefer a sedan for normal use. There are too many E46 M3’s and I know I just wouldn’t respect the car as much. They are very easy to find on craigslist, but I’d rather have the M5 sleeper, which is much more unique and rarer. Thanks for the suggestions though!

  21. E39Source says:

The E46 M3 is the only other car in this category that I would recommend, but I do prefer the M5 for my needs.

Much thanks! I’m really after the taillights and the better Nav because I cannot stand slow electronics. Actually, I can’t stand anything that’s slow haha 😉 My parents are buying me any car to stop me from riding motorcycles. I’m strongly considering this M5, but would you recommend any other similar cars that are standard with a fantastic driving experience? Thanks again! Your car is awesome btw

Pre model year 2001 (9/00 and later) had a few really nice things. The headlights and tail lights were upgraded the halos/LEDs, the Navigation screen was updated to 16:9, and the GPS computer went from MKII to MKIII, and some interior trim pieces got changed to ones that don’t wear as easily. That’s about it. A good ’01 with sub 100k would be fair at maybe 18-20. I haven’t been looking a ton recently though. Best of luck to you, thanks for watching!

Looks really good! What other differences are there between the pre-01 and post-01 M5’s. I’m looking to get an E39 M5 soon. Are there any other tips/advice you could offer me? What’s a good price for an ’01 with less than 100k miles
